Writer's Block: Personal Holidays

[Error: unknown template qotd]I wouldn't create a holiday. In fact, if it was in my power, I would get rid of some of them. Especially the artificial holidays that are meant to boost the sales of candy, cards and crap. Do we need Valentine's Day? It's a nice idea, but shouldn't we be telling our loved ones that we love them and showing them that we love them when we want to, not when others wants us to? Halloween is another one that annoys me as well. We're telling our kids it's alright to go run around the neighborhood and scare people for the sake of getting candy.
Not to mention the fact that there are more and more holidays that cause school to be closed. Our children and our future suffer from this. There is nothing to be gained from a child having a day off of school for Columbus Day. Why not be in school, learning about Columbus? I understand that the teachers need more time off, but they get a summer vacation, a Christmas vacation, a spring break even. They get more time off than Joe Blow that works at the Texaco station! And that is where our future generations are going to end up with the length of time they are not in school.
What's next? A week off so they can have a study week?

Date: 2008-10-09 06:25 pm (UTC)and without vday i prolly wouldn't have started dating my girlfriend because the 15th has a slight importance as does vday. now I could do without all the retail shit that goes with it but the day itself is nice.
*shrug*

Date: 2008-10-09 07:22 pm (UTC)In California, and in many other states, students attend school the same number of days each year (180) regardless of which holidays, breaks, vacations, etc. the district chooses to have off. Students having a holiday, say, Columbus Day, off, does not mean that they are missing out on a day of education. It just means we will go one day longer into the summer.
On a similar note, where I work, students do not attend school on Columbus Day, but the teachers do. Our contract is for 185 work days, so there are a handful of times when we are here even though the students are not.
